Flagstaff/Sedona, Arizona

We had planned to camp in Sedona, but it's still too cold at night to comfortably do so. We, again, found ourselves looking for a last minute host. After sending several requests on the couchsurfing site with no luck (mind you, this was all about 24 hours in advance), one of our Albuquerque hosts helped us out. His sister lives in Flagstaff (not terribly far from Sedona) and though she is not a couchsurfer, he asked if she would put us up for two nights. Thankfully, she agreed!

To Flagstaff we go! Our hosts were teachers at a small private school. They were preparing for a music competition and had fun stories about their sometimes "moody" kids- "I told him that if he can't fake a good attitude for the five minutes he is on stage, he will sit next to me and not compete. And he was all smiles after that!"

We stayed in a bunk bed at their house- It's been years since I had slept in a bunk bed, so that was fun. Downtown Flagstaff was adorable, complete with multiple thrift shops (my fave) and local breweries (Derik's fave). Historic Brewing Co's dry hopped sour and cucumber pils were incredible!

Walnut Canyon was a nice morning workout (completely downhill for the first half, then back up for the other half), with beautiful views. Snow bowl, a huge mountain you can see from all over the city, was beautiful, white, and quiet, as ski season is wrapping up.

Driving to Sedona, the view was absolutely breathtaking- a windy road with rocky mountain on one side and huge trees on the other. Sedona is known as a healing city, and it easily made the top of our "favorites" list. In hindsight, we should have spent more time there, but the time we did spend is the highlight of our trip thus far! Everyone needs to add "hike Devil's Bridge" to their bucket list. You'll thank us later.

Hint for our next city- it is mentioned in the song "Closer" by the Chainsmokers.

Side note regarding the Raising Cane's photo- Derik waited in line for 24 hours to be one of the first 20 customers at a new store opening in Austin. He was the 6th in line, so he got free Raising Cane's for a year! The picture below is the first Raising Cane's stop of our roadtrip.

  1. I think it's great you always add Derik's preferences. This helps us get to know you both better and shows how into each other you guys are! Cute!
